Just when you thought you had heard the end of constant transfer rumours surrounding Toronto FC‘s designated players, here we go again.

According to reports in Turkey and Italy, Beşiktaş are trying to sign Lorenzo Insigne before the Turkish transfer window closes on February 9.

The Italian was linked with fellow Istanbul giants Galatasaray last spring when rumours of Insigne’s discontent and unhappiness in Toronto began to come to light.

Insigne was spotted in Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis’ suite during a Serie A match in December leaving many to speculate that the 32-year-old was looking to orchestrate a return to his hometown club. Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina were all linked with a possible winter rescue but none came forward with a formal offer and all are believed to have balked at his wages.

Head coach John Herdman was eager to name a new team captain before preseason began, and the delay in anointing Jonathan Osorio lead many to believe the decision was dependent on the future of the club’s highest paid player.

The latest reports about Insigne come just four days after both he and Federico Bernardeschi scored in TFC’s first preseason friendly, a win over Nashville SC in Florida.

Should Insigne choose to leave this week to join the club where Canadian men’s national team legend Atiba Hutchinson became a Turkish football icon it would bring an end to one of the most anticipated and most disappointing errors in TFC history.
